Trump Turns Heads After Giving Update On $5,000 Dividend Check Promised To American Citizens

President Donald Trump is once again putting his proposed $5,000 “dividend” at the center of his midterm message, telling supporters that American adults could receive the payments if Republicans retain control of Congress in November.

Trump renewed the pledge during his campaign swing through Oklahoma, where he continued to argue that his administration’s economic policies could generate enough revenue to make the massive payments possible. The proposal would carry a price tag of roughly $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion, depending on the number of eligible recipients.

Trump has pointed to the scale of investments he says have been secured under his administration as evidence that the country can absorb the cost. He has cited a figure of $21 trillion, although the White House has more recently publicly cited more than $11.2 trillion in U.S. and foreign investment across manufacturing, infrastructure and technology.

The president has also argued that tariff revenue could help finance the dividend. However, the amount collected from tariffs is considerably below what would be required to cover the proposed payments on its own. The plan would also require congressional approval, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson, adding another major hurdle before checks could actually be issued.

Trump first unveiled the $5,000 proposal at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in September. Since then, polling has shown Americans divided — and in some surveys, firmly opposed — to the idea.

An Economist/YouGov survey found 45% of likely voters opposed the payments, compared with 43% who supported them. The same poll found that 61% did not believe Trump would ultimately deliver the money, while only 22% thought he would follow through.

Another national survey found 46% of voters would be less likely to support a candidate who backed the $5,000 payments, while 21% said the proposal would make them more likely to support that candidate.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted Sept. 11-14 found that 63% of Americans disapproved of Trump’s dividend proposal, including four in 10 Republicans and nine in 10 Democrats.

Other polling has produced more favorable results. A Harvard CAPS/Harris survey reported that 57% of voters supported the proposal, illustrating how opinions can shift depending on the wording and circumstances presented to respondents.

Trump has remained confident that the payments can become reality, pointing to previous legislative and spending promises that he says critics had dismissed before they were enacted. He has also referenced the $1,776 payment made to U.S. service members as another example of his administration delivering a promised benefit.

The proposal has drawn criticism from Democrats, who have accused Trump of tying a government payment to the outcome of an election. Supporters, meanwhile, argue that Americans should benefit directly from increased government revenue.

For now, the $5,000 dividend remains a campaign promise rather than an approved federal payment. Its future would depend on congressional action, the eventual funding mechanism and whether lawmakers can overcome the proposal’s substantial fiscal and political obstacles.
