Some dogs win hearts with goofy grins and wagging tails. A pooch named Cashew earned hers with wide, expressive eyes and a naturally worried expression that makes her look like, well, a permanently concerned potato.
Behind that unforgettable face is a rescue story that could have ended very differently. You see, owner Kelly came across Cashew while she was in Louisiana visiting family during her senior year of college. An elderly couple had posted the dog for sale on Facebook Marketplace and warned that they intended to take her to the pound if no one claimed her.
The dog had originally been a gift to the wife, who had never really been a dog person. But once the soon-to-be-pet-parent learned of Cashew’s potential fate, she decided to adopt her right away. What began as a spontaneous rescue quickly turned into a close companionship, and the little brown pooch soon showed off a personality just as memorable as her one-of-a-kind looks.
Kelly describes Cashew’s signature look as her “perpetual concern.” Her expressive face often makes her appear to be carefully studying everything around her, which her owner feels means her pet is remarkably intuitive and observant.
There is far more to her than the worried expression. Cashew is a champion cuddler, adores food, and has an endearing habit Kelly calls “upsies,” bracing her front paws against someone until she gets a boost up to a bed, couch, or another high spot.
Those quirks persuaded a friend of Kelly’s that Cashew deserved a social media account of her own. The videos highlighting her dramatic side eye and rescue story quickly caught on, and her puzzled little face became instantly recognizable. To date, she has over 475,000 TikTok followers are counting.
Now, the little brown pup was long assumed to be a Dachshund-Beagle mix however a DNA test told a far more complicated story. It revealed ancestry from 13 different breeds, including Rat Terrier, German Shepherd, Pitbull, Chihuahua, and Miniature Pinscher, according to the test results.
For Kelly, the account has never felt like a job. The most meaningful part has been hearing from followers who say Cashew’s videos ease their anxiety and lift their spirits after difficult days. Her concerned little face got the internet’s attention, but the warmth behind it is what made everyone stay.
