A New Jersey singer-songwriter says a birthday dinner with loved ones turned into an unforgettable disappointment after a restaurant served her dessert with a message that referenced her disability.
Antonia Sinibaldi had gathered with family and friends to celebrate her 29th birthday at a popular waterfront restaurant in Weehawken when an unexpected inscription on her dessert plate stunned everyone at the table.

What was supposed to be a festive moment quickly became awkward and upsetting when the dessert arrived decorated with the words “Happy Birthday Wheelchair.”
Sinibaldi, who has used a motorized wheelchair for most of her life, said she was shocked by what she saw. The musician suffered a spinal cord injury in a drunk-driving crash when she was just 2 years old, leaving her paralyzed from the neck down.
According to Sinibaldi, the message immediately took the celebration in a painful direction. She said her reaction was not only emotional but physical, explaining that her body began trembling and spasming before she could even fully process what had happened.
The birthday guest later said she spoke with management about the incident but felt the response fell short. She claimed she was offered complimentary drinks rather than receiving the immediate apology she expected.
As outrage spread online, the restaurant issued a public statement explaining what it says led to the mistake.
Management said the word “wheelchair” had been included internally as a location identifier so staff would know where to deliver the birthday dessert and candle. According to the restaurant, that note was mistakenly transferred onto the plate itself.
The business insisted there was no intention to mock or disrespect Sinibaldi. However, officials acknowledged that seeing the word displayed on a birthday dessert could understandably be hurtful and offensive.
The restaurant expressed regret over the incident and said it is reviewing its communication and ticketing procedures to prevent a similar mistake from happening again. Representatives also stated that efforts have been made to contact Sinibaldi directly.
Meanwhile, social media users rallied behind the singer-songwriter after she shared her experience online. Many commenters expressed disbelief that such a message made it from an internal order note to a customer’s table, while others described the incident as insensitive and unacceptable.
Despite the restaurant’s apology and explanation, Sinibaldi says the experience left a lasting impression.

While she acknowledged the business has attempted to make amends, she has made it clear that she does not plan to return. For her, what should have been a joyful birthday memory became a reminder of how a simple workplace error can have a deeply personal impact.
