A former White House lawyer offered up a blunt answer during an interview with Zeteo regarding the recent confirmation of Attorney General Todd Blanche.
Ty Cobb, who served at the whim of President Donald Trump from July 2017 through May 2018, was asked by the news outlet if the new AG would stand up to the president if he demanded that Blanche try to invalidate the results of the 2026 midterm elections. “If the midterms don’t go Trump’s way this fall, is there any world in which Todd Blunt stands up to Trump if he’s asked to find some fake evidence of voter fraud?” asked the host.
“Or are we screwed now?” continued the host. Cobb took a minute to collect himself before commenting that the American people were “screwed.” It comes after Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared a post supporting Blanche but it backfired spectacularly.

“Great. That’s what I suspected,” responded the host. Cobb, 76, boasts an impressive resume, having served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland.
During the 1990s, Cobb served as special trial counsel in an independent investigation of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He was asked to join the White House by Trump, after being referred to the president by John Dowd, a member of the president’s private legal team.

After joining, Cobb reported directly to the president on matters regarding the Robert Mueller investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election. According to Cobb, he took the assignment because “it was an impossible task with a deadline” and because “I have rocks in my head and steel balls.”
In May 2018, Cobb — who did not vote for the president — announced his departure from the White House, commenting, “It has been an honor to serve the country in this capacity at the White House. I wish everybody well moving forward.”Since leaving the White House, Cobb has become critical of Trump, saying that the president’s attacks on the Judiciary as “one of the greatest threats to our democracy at this stage of the game.”

He also cited the alleged rumors of the president’s cognitive decline as “palpable.” In June, Cobb commented, “We are witnessing the greatest onslaught of corruption in the history of mankind.”
Uphill battle
Trump’s push to get Blanche confirmed as his second attorney general—having fired Pam Bondi several months ago—has not been an easy battle. Several Republicans have commented that they would not vote in favor of the Trump nominee.

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski said on Friday that she would oppose Blanche’s confirmation. “The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” she wrote on X.
“I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case,” she added. Despite her vow not to approve Blanche, the Trump nominee was approved in a slim 50-49 vote.
